What is a Workbook?

For starts, I have been asked this a lot and it doesn’t surprise me anymore when someone asks me this. A workbook takes on many forms:

  • a planner or agenda

  • a guide or manual

  • an activity or exercise book

A workbook is several worksheets packaged together to create a book.

I have seen workbooks being called “low-content” books. This makes it seem less than what it is. Low content does not mean low value, in fact, it is quite the opposite. A workbook is where your participant does all their work, and that is very valuable! You do this by allowing your reader to participate in your book by creating interactive and engaging worksheets. So, how do you create a worksheet? How does a worksheet make your audience do the work? Think about this to start…

  • Determine the benefit of the worksheet.

  • Make it engaging and interactive. 

  • Balance form with function.

Why aren’t more books workbooks?!

Hmm…I don’t really know the answer to this, but my job is to change this!

To be honest, I don’t read as much as I would like to. When I do, it's hard to retain what I read amongst a busy life. There is so much great advice in books but they are not supportive in providing action to apply their teachings. The reader is just a reader. To take action on the advice, most books don’t provide the space “to do” or even to plan for these acts.

Here is my advice for you…

  • Add value to your reader by providing action.

  • Engage with your reader by interactive exercises.

  • Effectively teach your reader with an asynchronous tool.

These are just some of the benefits of a workbook. Doing this, your reader not only becomes an active participant, but practices the learning as applied knowledge as well. 

What’s the Workbook Quick Start?

  1. Your Path - Maybe you have already started or maybe you haven’y. This step is acknowledging where you are and is now a matter of pulling all the pieces together. Knowing your path will help to get you to your final destination, in this case, your workbook!

  4. Your Book - What is it about and what value are you hoping to give to your reader? You have so much to offer and your readers will appreciate receiving your expertise!
