Write for Wellness: The Benefits of Journaling Outside in Nature

Imagine sitting beneath the rustling leaves, the soft trickling of a nearby stream, and the warmth of the sun on your face. Journaling outside in nature isn’t just a refreshing change of scenery; it’s a powerful practice that can transform your thoughts, creativity, and mental well-being.

Enhanced Creativity - Nature stimulates the mind. The vibrant colors and soothing sounds encourage new ideas and perspectives. By taking your journal outdoors, you tap into this creative reservoir, allowing for uninhibited writing that flows more freely than within the confines of four walls.

Improved Focus and Clarity - Immersing yourself in a natural setting helps to clear mental clutter. The sights and sounds of nature can center your thoughts, making it easier to reflect, process experiences, and articulate feelings in your journal.

Stress Reduction - Nature has a calming effect. Journaling amidst trees and birdsong can significantly reduce anxiety and stress levels. It’s a mindful escape that enriches your writing and fosters a sense of peace and tranquility.

Physical Health Benefits - Spending time outdoors encourages movement. Whether it’s a gentle walk to your favorite spot or a hike to find inspiration, the physical activity boosts your mood and overall health, complementing your journaling practice.

Mindfulness and Presence - Nature invites you to be present. When you journal outside, you engage your senses—taking in the scents, sights, and sounds around you. This mindfulness practice enhances your ability to reflect deeply, fostering personal growth through your writing.

Connection to Nature - Journaling outside allows you to build a relationship with your environment. As you write, you may discover new insights and connections to the world around you, enriching both your writing and your life.

Embrace the fresh air, let nature inspire your words, and experience the multitude of benefits that come from connecting with both your thoughts and the natural world. Start your outdoor journaling journey today with prompt page below, and watch as your creativity flourishes and your worries fade away.

Here are a few special tips inspired by Moniques journal, Seeds, to help you with your journaling practice:

1. Surroundings

Set yourself up in a beautiful space to write. If you are inside, try sitting next to a window. If you get to be outside, choose a spot where you feel comfortable, try sitting on an outdoor bench or a soft spot on the ground.

2. Materials

Make sure you have what you need to feel comfortable during your writing practice. Maybe it is your favourite drink, a special pen, a blanket or pillow.

3. Pause

Take a moment before you start to write. Relax and breathe.

4. PromptS

Use your Seeds Prompt Page to prepare you in your writing session. In this special prompt page you will be asked to:

  • Fill in the date

  • Check off which season it is

  • Make a note of the weather

  • Indicate what time of day it is

  • Tick the phase of the moon it is

  • Note your location

  • Write one word to describe your current feeling

  • Make a note of what you see, hear, smell, touch, taste

  • Ask for guidance to the larger, natural world

  • Indicate your writing time or theme

5. Time

Use a timer to set the intention for your writing session and try to stick to it.

6. Be OPEN

Turn off the editor and write freely without boundaries or hesitation.

7. Gratitude

Take a moment to end your session with a grateful heart and acknowledge the outside space once again before you end your outdoor writing practice.

Relax and have fun with this writing process!
