Working through loss

case study

Author Client Workbook

If you haven’t experienced the power of colour, in particular the messages that colour can share with us when working through loss, I introduce you to Susan McKenzie. Susan is a Colour Therapist, Healer and Grief Specialist.

I first met Susan as part of a Goddess Group with other like-minded women. We were both curious about each others passions; her wisdom on the psychology of colour and my knowledge of creating interactive workbooks…Susan knew she wanted a book and immediately realized that it had to be a workbook!

This book is more than a book. I categorize it as an activity book because Susan wanted to incorporate several interactive components — stories, colour, mantras, meditations and journaling. All these elements were blended into her book creating an experience to support the reader on their healing journey.

In the early stages of creating her book, Susan got the nudge and motivation to finish developing it so that she could showcase it at a bereavement conference which she was asked to participate in. Having this goal encouraged us both to sort through all the elements and compile them to create this gentle space for the reader.

This book is filled with wisdom, compassion and healing. It is a place one can safely go to when they need guidance on the complex journey working through loss.

About the Symbol

One of my favourite parts working with Susan while developing this workbook, was creating the iconic symbol that was to be used on the front cover and repetitively throughout the workbook.

The image symbolizes healing and growth. The inner tree rings represent the growth and seasons of a tree, which can be compared to the journey through loss. The image also includes a sunrise or sunset, representing life and death. Both light and dark are important for our growth. Since colour is used throughout the book as a healing tool, a golden rainbow representing authenticity. The goal is to bring comfort and support through the colour gold as you go through your transformational journey of grief.
